VR Endless Possibilities

Image
Forget reality: In virtual reality, you can be whomever and wherever you want. VR makes the unreal real, using computer software and hardware that responds to our body’s movements to immerse us in a convincing alternate existence. There’s plenty of space to roam. VR places can be huge. In  Second Life , an early pioneer of virtual worlds, you can attend university, own a blimp, have blue fur — whatever. It includes more than 600 square miles of otherworld existence. The worlds of  Minecraft , another digital sandbox, could cover Earth eight times over. The possibilities are endless. VR movies offer new vehicles for narrative structure. VR classrooms may reach students who don’t thrive behind a desk. Soon, we may have virtual meetings, conferences, classes and parties. According to tech entrepreneur Philip Rosedale, who founded  Second Life , “We have an insatiable appetite for communicating with each other. VR is the next medium in that regard.” Right now, the ...

High Stakes for Virtual Reality

Image
Virtual Reality is ... well, real. The last year has seen the launch of every major VR platform, from high-quality tethered systems like HTC’s Vive and Facebook’s Oculus Rift, through to cheap-and-cheerful smartphone-based platforms like Google’s Daydream and Samsung’s Gear VR. The early adopters have bought in, the launch games have been launched, and now that the initial flurry of excitement has died down, the more pressing questions are left: how will the platforms evolve? What will you actually be able to do with them? And is VR just a stepping stone anyway, to the even more science-fiction future of augmented reality tech? At its inception, VR is unquestionably a gaming technology first and foremost. The most expensive and technologically advanced systems have an almost total focus on serving the hardcore gamer market. Even the simpler systems, which lack the pixel-pushing power necessary to satisfy modern players, still end up with a preponderance of games and g...

No offense to Captain Kirk, but I always felt I was better equipped to take the  Star Trek Enterprise Drone  to warp speed. I mean, I spent my childhood watching science fiction and riding my bike like it was a spaceship, I just knew I could fly the Starship Enterprise like a maestro. With The  Star Trek Enterprise Drone , We Can All Be Captains Of course a remote controlled  Star Trek Enterprise Drone  is going to look awesome as it flies, at warp speed, through the air. What is impressive is the fact that the  Star Trek Enterprise Drone  looks so good when sitting still.  A nice added touch for collectors, you even get a display stand. Boldly Go Where No Drone Has Gone Before With an integrated light system, 10+ authentic sounds, and advanced quadcopter technology, the RC Enterprise lets you explore space with smooth and stable flight. Pull the trigger on the remote control to initiate warp drives. The  Star Trek Enterprise D...

The Advancement of Virtual Reality is Taking Shape

Image
As in any medium that mixes hardware and software, the success of virtual reality is entirely dependent on the development and availability of content that consumers want, and are willing to pay for. And while there are a growing number of developers building VR content, the people doing that work seem like they don’t expect to be able to make much money doing so anytime soon. According to the study, developers expect “dramatic” growth of between 200% and 300% by 2018, and “believe [VR’s] ‘inflection point’ is still two-to-three years off.” More to the point, developers seem aware that in the short term they won’t be making a lot of money off their VR efforts. That’s in part because they think there will be multiple models of VR content, and prices for that content that are either very low or very high. In total, 51% of all VR content is expected to cost $24 or less. Still, developers are flocking to virtual reality, with 44% of all of those working to build VR content ha...
